What is Accutane?
Accutane (known generically as Isotretinoin) was a drug used to treat severe acne. It is unknown how Accutane works on a cellular level. What is known is how Accutane works to prevent the formation of acne.
- It reduces the size of the oil glands and reduces the amount of oil the skin produces.
- Acne bacteria (P. acnes) lives in the skin oil. By reducing the skin oil the number of acne bacteria is also reduced.
- Pores become clogged by skin cells produced inside the pore. Accutane reduces the production of skin cells.
- Accutane also acts as an anti-inflammatory.
What are the Risks?
The risks associated with Accutane were deemed by the manufacturer to be so high that Accutane was withdrawn from the market. Accutane is associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (including regional ileitis), Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in patients without a history of intestinal problems. In some instances, symptoms have persisted after Accutane treatment has been halted.
A study done in July of 2006 examined eighty-five cases of IBD associated with Accutane. All 85 cases were linked to Accutane.
The FDA has required the Accutane warning label to be edited many times over its history. However, Hoffmann-La Roche added Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease to the label well after independent testing linked Accutane to intestinal disorders. A majority of incidents concerning Accutane have not been reported to the FDA leaving millions of consumers to be evaluated.
For some, who have suffered from severe acne and exhausted all other remedies, the benefits of using Accutane outweigh the possible consequenses.
